Greg Johns has worked as a full-time sculptor for 38 years and has completed significant commissions throughout Australia, as well as in Singapore, Spain, New Zealand, Korea, England and Ireland. Since 1990 the main focus of his practise has been to develop an approach to making sculpture which is both conceptually and materially ‘Australian’ in feel, with forms that emerge from both a visual and a ‘felt’ reading of the Australian landscape. "As a sculptor working in this great landscape, I remain perplexed by how little sculpture produced in Australia reflects this place," he says. "We are perhaps locked into our cities and computers; as well as being overloaded by the international”.

Greg Johns, Land Mandala, 2009, Corten Steel, 6 metres high, Cammeray Square, Sydney

“Over the last decade, the Australian landscape has become a major influence on my sculpture” Johns says. “It is not, however, the only influence. Over the last 29 years of practice, a layering of ideas has gradually unfolded and evolved. These conceptual notions are now well rooted in this landscape”. They draw conceptually on both older belief systems and contemporary developments in physics and philosophy, often suggesting that a bridge should exist between the old and the new.

While his sculpture connects to big picture, universal themes, local flavour and context are important to his work. In 2002 he purchased 160 hectares of land in the Adelaide Hills. It is big sky country under which sits an archetypal Australian landscape. A great place to put sculpture in. “This place is important to me”, he says. “It is where I can walk, get away, dream”.

Greg Johns’ sculpture is not entirely urban in feel. There is a toughness and a vulnerability about his work which is different in feel from the painted, highly finished work of the urban based sculptures in Sydney. “I sense in Australian sculpture at present a variety of regional approaches arising.” the artist says. “I believe this is worth embracing. We can all learn from each other, rather than defending a singular ‘correct’ approach. There is also room perhaps for a hybridising to occur between the regions, while simultaneously maintaining a particular local flavour”.
