Nancy Sever Gallery is delighted to launch a virtual gallery with our first online exhibition featuring leading Melbourne-based artist Wendy Kelly.
The complexity of the ordinary is an exhibition of paintings showcasing the development of Wendy’s singular visual language centred in a form of geometric abstraction into more complex forms.
Exhibition dates: now to 1st September 2024.
Although known since the 1990s for developing a singular visual language centred in a form of geometric based reductive abstraction, my long abiding interest in these elements has developed into more complex forms. Geometry and pattern, with their sense of specific concrete order, repetition, drawing and non narrative approach, begged for further re-interpretation.
The current work draws on a long held collection of fabrics that revelled in the everyday. Geometry and pattern dominate, and when disturbed, they had the effect of fracturing the rhythms and rigidity of the abstraction. They developed an inherent tension, new readings and meanings. Light became a subject, unlike the way it had been used in the past, where it was a tool, and they seek complexity in the ordinary.
